Want to save America? US should be at 99% broadband penetration, not 66%
Estimates for getting broadband to the remaining 4% of US homes from the new improved FCC suggest it would cost about $4,000 per home. $20B to get the last 4-5MM broadband-capable.
This week's Economist summarizes recent World Bank data about what every uptick in broadband penetration buys in GDP growth. Here's a zinger: 10% more penetration gets 1.2% more growth. In this case $20B invested once helps grow our $10T economy by $45ish B per year. Though think of the impact of persuading the 30% who have opted to stick with non-broadband. Surely that would be cheaper than $4,000. Cable charges about $240/year for 'lite' broadband, of which half is probably profit. Sent on the go from my Peek
