And today...a Lego birthday cake, complete with song and blowing candles.

The death of voice

People don't talk on the phone anymore.

Kids definitely don't . They text.

People in business are increasingly not listening to voicemail. Deloitte just shut down their corporate voicemail system. Nobody was checking their desk voicemails. Between cell phone 'get me any time' and (mobile) email for all else, you don't need it.

Sam from drop.io told me his iPhone is really just an internet device -- because he never talks on it. He reads his voicemails using Phonetag.

Same here -- I have 100 or more unlistened voicemails in my Phonetag box. Occasionally I dial-in to hear one that was transcribed too too poorly (moderately poorly is actually OK).

At the office we have fewer conference calls and live meetings than any time in the past. Partly because of quick IM discussions, email of course, mobile email too (which means all stakeholders are always FYId and up to speed; and the instant nature means you don't need to call).

Here are the last ten phone calls I made
- my uncle, re a party, dialed by mistake as I was looking up his email; I hung up before he answered - today
- my partner Ursula, at 6pm two days ago, twice, re dinner plans. Went to voicemail both times. No message. Wrote an email instead to her Blackberry
- called back a lawyer who emailed me a proposal re some work and called twice to follow up. Left message saying I got his mail and would email back - Friday noon
- checked my voicemail to hear that lawyer's message
- called a buyer from a huge retailer to follow up on my email from the previous day - Friday AM
- called my health insurance company to do something that I had tried to do on their website
- called a business colleague to get him live for 10 min. He called me back a few hours later - Thurs eve
- called into a conference bridge for some VC firm

That's it.

Are you still talking on the phone?

Seeing Avenue Q

Fine leisure for a Sunday. Here's a tip -- a highly porous intermission re-entry. Just walz in and grab a seat upstairs on Sunday at 320pm. Free for the 2nd half. Though we paid the 60 bucks....
