 Amol --

All throughout August, our members of Congress are back in town. Insurance companies and partisan attack groups are stirring up fear with false rumors about the President's plan, and it's extremely important that folks like you speak up now.

So we've cooked up an easy, powerful way for you to make a big impression: Office Visits for Health Reform.

All this week, OFA members like you will be stopping by local congressional offices to show our support for insurance reform. You can have a quick conversation with the local staff, tell your personal story, or even just drop off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you.

We'll provide everything you need: the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information about how the health care crisis affects your state for you to drop off (with the option of adding your personal story), and a step-by-step guide for your visit. According to our records, you live near Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's office in New York, NY. Sign up now to visit Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's office in New York this week:

(Not your representative, or think there might be another office that's easier for you to get to? Click here to find a different office: http://my.barackobama.com/OfficeLookup )

As you've probably seen in the news, special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it's getting ugly. Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can't let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand.

Office Visits for Health Reform are our chance to show that the vast majority of American voters know that the cost of inaction is too high to bear, and strongly support passing health reform in 2009.

Don't worry if you've never done anything like this before. The congressional staff is there to listen, and your opinion as a constituent matters a lot. And if you bring a friend, you'll have more fun and make an even greater impact.

Wherever you live, these visits matter: Many representatives are pushing hard toward reform, and they are taking a lot of heat from special interests. They deserve our thanks and need our support to continue the fight. But those who are still putting insurance companies and partisan point-scoring ahead of their constituents must know that voters are watching -- and that we expect better. Earlier this week, the President wrote that "this is the moment our movement was built for" and asked us all to commit to join at least one event this month. This is the way to answer that call, and rise to the challenge of this moment together.

Thank you for going the extra mile when it matters the most,

 Mitch

NYer piece on the Kindle

As PR goes, oh boy. A dedicated New Yorker piece that amounts to a business history and extended review round up that predicts -- to the product's target market -- that this Kindle thing is pretty much the future of books, warts and all.

Worth a look to see the capsule history of Kindle (and e-books) from zero to hero.

The most surprising part is that Baker doesn't really relish any of the key advantages of Kindle -- mainly the 'carry 1 not 500' aspect, and the 'get most anything any time'. He must not move around too much.

Rent my buddy's studio apt in NYC

--
$1800 Studio With a View In Tudor City (Near UN) (Midtown East)

I'm a film student who will be moving out of the country in
mid-August to pursue my MFA. If you choose to rent this apartment
you'll be helping me fulfill my lifelong dream as well as have the
opportunity to live in Tudor City.

The apartment is a studio on a high floor with a view of the skyline
above and the garden below, it's got plenty of space to store things
(one small closet and one medium sized walk-in storage area). The
building has a 24 hour doorman, laundry facilities and roof access. You
are close to Grand Central and also bus stops on 42nd street (1st and
2nd Ave). The utilities are included with the rent, and internet access
is $30 / month. The apartment has been recently painted, but you are
free to paint it whatever color you wish as well as hang pictures and
the like to make the place your own.

I'm the owner of the apartment and I'm not asking for a penny more than
I pay right now to maintain it. I have three large leaning shelves which
you are more than welcome to use as well as a dresser. If you're the
right person who will cherish this space like I have, a one to three
year lease is possible.

Still bad

- Insane, crazy job searchers hitting me up the other night. Blech.

More reflections on the Pre

It's small and slippery. Actually very unpleasant to use the camera -- I was terrified of dropping it today at a job site. The balance in your hand of gripping the body, leaving the lens clear, and touching the Shoot button is real tough. Need two hands at least. My pocket Nikon -- easy one-handed use and access to lots of juice like zoom and light settings. Depends on the occasions.

There is no way to scroll, which you have to do a lot when reading email or web. Neither fits a screenful very well. Touch is tiring and unbalanced/precarious for this. Flick, flick, flick...

It also sucks for precision in cursor placement. Think composing and editing emails.

Space bar is soft at the ends. Can't press there.

Thoe social network integration is a delight at first -- pics in the contact list. But so what. None of the fun! Updates, posts etc.

Big UI design flaw

I think there is a big problem in the UI design of the Pre. The back swipe. It is a non, cued action that has an invisible physical regiin too. ItLs not a button, and it isn't an action ON a part of the screen. And even then, its behavior is contextual. It goes back if you are in the tree structure of an app UI, though sometimes backs out of the app entirely or does nothing. Hmm.

The little pearl button is kind of a mega, back __ goes home.

(WTF with the non-orange alt keys by the way??? They are white on the key domes but you have to hit orange-alt not shift to get them. Damn these 3-function keyboards.)
