Is Palm Pre successful yet?

The gadget got awesome press and it is pretty decent but browsing their App store is discouraging. The #1 app, Accuweather, has 300k downloads. The "Palm Classic" app only has 50k.

Western photography

I'm hanging in Texas and reflecting on the excellent recent MoMA show on the subject of western photography. This joint is covered in cowboy photos (the bbq joint was covered in cheerleaders).

First of all the Richard Prince (Marlboro Man) imagery is an absolutely maasive departure from the crowded, grainy, action photography that seems the feel of most of this cowboy stuff on the walls here at the Gaylord Texan. Those images are iconic partly because they are amazingly distinctive -- in form and emotional content.

 Second, no Indians!

Third, "the West" as a place of fantastic self-imagination isn't just for California. It's definitely definitely rooted in this near-West "I'm a cowboy badass" self-image of Texans etc -- probably as old as Texas itself. These you only think of California for fanciful re-invention; but you can absolutely put on a cowboy hat and be reborn.

By the way, it was 100 degrees here in Dallas today. Ouchie. I spent about 3 minutes total outdoors.

The much discussed Cheney smoking gun

The Daily Beast - The Morning Scoop - August 25, 2009

 CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

 DECLASSIFIED
1. CIA Releases Cheney Docs

Earlier this year, former vice president Dick Cheney had requested that
the CIA release documents that he said would prove that "enhanced
interrogation techniques" worked. His request was, at first, denied, but
now ABC News reports the documents have been released. So is Cheney
vindicated? Spencer Ackerman at The Washington Independent gives the
documents a read and finds that, not only do they not support Cheney's
claim, but in fact they sometimes show the opposite: traditional,
non-coercive interrogations often worked well at prying valuable
information from detainees. "Cheney's public account of these documents
have conflated the difference between information acquired from
detainees, which the documents present, and information acquired from
detainees through the enhanced interrogation program, which they don't."

Pascale milestones

She's 2.5 years now -- 31 months.

38 inches tall - grown 2 inches since Jan 19. At that rate, she'll do 3.5 inches per year or another 3 feet by age 9?? Probably slowing down a bit.

 Some big milestones:
- the answer to WHY is "Because" (and then the same thing again - tautological mostly)
- she went to the potty by herself on 8/20. And again the next morning 8/21. Still in diapers though
- she is singing songs like 'Tomorrow' and 'Somewhere over the rainbow' -- showtunes! Not just Wiggles
- she is playing pretend with Ultra, in a room with the door closed, doing some dances.
- she draws squares and faces with necks and letters P, C, O, U
- she can count to 20 including #15 and add 1 and 1
- she is comfortable in water, jumping in, but not yet with floaties

Big cranes over LIC

This sky-high crane towers over a city block that used to be a massive municipal parking lot. New use? A few hundred thousand square feet of offices, coming to Queens Plaza in a year or two.

Investment continues to reshape LIC.

Color of the season: pink

I'm only back a day in NYC and already it's strikingly clear that the color this fall is going to be pink. It was all over Madison Avenue.
